Digital SLRs

So I am saving up 2000$ to go to France with school next spring, and I have not gotten far. The deadline for the payment is in December and I am not so sure that I am going to make the deadline. So I have decided that if I do not make enough, what I do make will go to a nice digital camera. I love film, don't get me wrong, but the convience of a digital is just what I am looking for right now. So, I am looking for opinions on cameras. I love Nikon and Canon, but I am open to any opinions/options. So let me know what kind of Digital SLR camera you use and if you like it, etc. I kind of have a price range right now, but not entirely sure what it will be yet, or if I am even getting the camera. My range would be like 500-800 dollars.
